Development of High Strength Nanolayered Composites by Accumulative Roll Bonding

Nanolayered metals are ultra-high-strength composite structures consisting of alternating layers with thicknesses below 100 nm. Yield strength of copper-niobium nanolayers with 5 nm layer thickness can reach 10 times that of 304 stainless steel. Therefore, nanolayered metals are very promising materials for automotive, aerospace, and defense industry applications, where lightweight and high strength are desired. Furthermore, nanolayers exhibit extremely high thermal stability and nuclear radiation resistance, making them important for nuclear energy applications.

In the proposed project, we are going to design and produce metal nanolayers using a novel roll bonding technique and we will implement alloying to further improve the mechanical properties. As a result of our work, it will become possible to manufacture these nanomaterials at a large scale for various applications.
