We are pleased to announce the next event in the METU Department of Mechanical Engineering 70th Anniversary Seminar Series. Our distinguished alumnus, Prof. Dr. Rizwan Uddin (ME’80), from the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, will deliver a seminar entitled: “Nuclear Energy: from GEN-II to GEN-IV Reactors – for Mechanical and Other Engineers”.
Date: 15 May 2026, Friday
Time: 14:00
Venue: E200, METU Mechanical Engineering Department
The seminar will provide a comprehensive overview of nuclear energy technologies, beginning with the fundamental principles of nuclear energy and extending to the recent resurgence of interest in advanced reactor systems. Key challenges related to safety, cost, and next-generation GEN-IV reactor technologies will also be discussed, with particular emphasis on topics relevant to mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering audiences.
Prof. Dr. Rizwan Uddin is Professor and Head of the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. A graduate of the METU Mechanical Engineering Department (1980), he is internationally recognized for his contributions to nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics, two-phase flow, CFD, and advanced numerical methods.
We cordially invite all our students, alumni, and colleagues interested in nuclear energy and advanced reactor technologies to attend this seminar as part of our department’s 70th Anniversary celebrations.
