Research interests

Experimental research: The aluminum particles are activated using Gallium-Indium-Tin-Zinc eutectics. This metal eutectic penetrates into the alumina layer; forms crack on the aluminum layer and boundary of the aluminum particles which reduces the mechanical strength of the aluminum and activate the aluminum surface for further reaction with water. Due to its higher specific surface and insufficient galinstan eutectic content on the surface, the smaller-sized aluminum (30 µm) particles exhibit lower hydrogen generation rate than bigger-sized aluminum (60 and 350 µm) particles. With 15% galinstan eutectic by mass in 60 µm aluminum particles, 97.5% of hydrogen yield is achieved. The galinstan eutectic content should be increased beyond 15% by mass to maximize the hydrogen yield for smaller particles (<60 µm). The temperature augmentation influence the hydrogen generation rate and hydrogen yield as well.

Osman Gültekin

Dr. Osman Gültekin is a visiting researcher as part of his TÜBİTAK BİDEB 2236 Co-Funded Brain Circulation Scheme 2 funding.

Biography

Osman Gültekin holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Civil Engineering at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey where he was introduced to the realm of continuum and computational solid mechanics. Upon completing his Bachelor’s study in 2011, Osman moved to Stuttgart, Germany and enrolled in the international Master’s degree program, Computational Mechanics of Materials and Structures (COMMAS) at University of Stuttgart where he performed the Master’s thesis study under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Dal and late Prof. Dr. Christian Miehe. He received his M.Sc. degree in 2014 with the thesis entitled “A Phase-Field Approach to the Fracture of Anisotropic Medium”.

In February 2014, Osman started his doctoral studies at the Institute of Biomechanics, Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerhard A. Holzapfel. His research was largely focused the better understanding of the mechanics of soft biological tissues, in particular the myocardium and arterial walls in health and disease based on the computational methods. He completed his Ph.D. study with distinction in November 2018 with the thesis entitled “Computational Inelasticity of Fibrous Biological Tissues with a Focus on Viscoelasticity, Damage and Rupture”.

As of January 2019, he has been pursuing his postdoctoral studies as a visiting researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey. Since May 2020, he has been working on a stand-alone project entitled “Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Thermomechanical Fracture Processes in Polymers Accounting for Ductile to Brittle Transition” at the same department. The project is funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Cofund program introduced by TUBITAK under BIDEB 2236 Co-Funded Brain Circulation Scheme 2.

Research interests

The research areas of Dr. Osman Gültekin mainly cover the computational modeling and analysis of multi-physics problems occurring in fibrous soft biological tissues, polymeric and composite materials with a focus on the hyperelastic, viscoelastic, plastic and fracture responses. In this regard, Osman has been actively involved in the computational modeling of viscoelasticity in human passive myocardium, see Fig. 1, capturing the delayed elastic mechanical response of the left ventricular wall in a cardiac pressure cycle with strong hystereses behavior.

Figure 1 - The collagen fiber stretch associated with elastic (top) and viscoelastic (bottom) responses during a single cardiac cycle from A to E.

Apart from the cardiac tissue, he has also focused on the numerical aspects of multi-physics problems in biomechanics, in particular the intricate phenomenon of human arterial rupture occurring due to cardiovascular diseases, such as, atherosclerosis, aortic dissection and aneurysms, see Fig. 2. He proposed one of the first anisotropic crack phase-field models with a novel energetic failure criterion featuring distinct crack evolutions associated with the isotropic matrix material response and the anisotropic collagenous fiber response of arterial tissues.

Figure 2 - Evolution of crack within a segment of human aorta which will eventually cause a tear that leads to the creation of false lumen under two different loading patterns (a) and (b) in a single cardiac cycle from A to C, respectively.

He is currently interested in inelastic mechanical responses of polymeric materials such as rubber-like materials and amorphous glassy polymers with an emphasis given to viscoelasticity, see Fig. 3 and thermomechanical fracture. In the future, he would like to establish a laboratory dealing with experimental and computational biomechanics and continue his research on the way to develop holistic approaches through data-driven modeling and/or artificial intelligence that can enable the communication between the meso- and micro-scale patient-specific mechanical information and the extant macro-scale continuum models. Consequently, these research studies should aim to support clinics, medical monitoring and investigation as well as the biomedical industry.

In this project, Wavelet Transform and Nonstationary time series models are employed for the detection, localization and estimation of fatigue cracks in cantilever beams via vibration signals. For this purpose, beams including intact and cracked specimens are excited with a controlled force (acceleration) using an electromechanical shaker. Acceleration signals recorded from beams with different crack properties are processed and modelled. Then crack related features that are extracted from models/signals are used for diagnosis purpose.
